BREAKING NEWS: Cornwall Nationals pro hockey team announces immediate shutdown

sean Feb 20, 2018 - 5:43pm

Cornwall's professional hockey team, the Nationals of the Federal Hockey League, today announced it would cease operations effective immediately. Here's the club's press release:

The Cornwall Nationals of the Federal Hockey League have ceased operations, effective immediately.

"This is a really sad day for hockey in Cornwall," said Rodney Rivette, owner/president. "Unfortunately, due to our financial situation, we can no longer continue."

Saturday night's attendance was announced at 358 in what turned out to be the team's last game at the Ed Lumley Arena inside the civic complex.

"We've exhausted every avenue possible to save the team," said Rivette. "This is so unfortunate because owner Will Beauvais has done everything possible to make this work."

The organization would like to thank its small but loyal fan base as well as all local sponsors and volunteers.

The Nats have had Glengarry connections over their short tenure in the Seaway City, including current head coach Joel Trottier, of Alexandria. This was the club's second year of operations, following on the heels of the Cornwall River Kings, which played in the Quebec-based LNAH.

Oh so close for Tagwi's hockey girls, Holy Trinity advances

sean Feb 16, 2018 - 1:33am

The girls hockey team from Tagwi Secondary School will miss out on playoff action by the slimmest of margins.

Needing a win today in Long Sault to advance, the Warriors dropped a pair of contests to complete regular-season play tied for fourth place with La Citadelle, at 7 points.

So a tiebreaker was needed to determine which team would advance. Head-to-head they played once, tying 4-4. And both teams had 3 wins on the season.

The third tiebreaker step using the formula [GF/(GF+GA)] for all season games was then used.

  • Tagwi's results: 4-4, 2-3, 2-1, 1-4, 2-1, 5-1, 1-2, 0-4        [17/(17+20)]=.46
  • La Citadelle Scores: 4-4, 0-3, 5-0, 4-3, 1-2, 3-2, 3-4, 1-4     [21/(21+22)]=.48

La Citadelle wins the tiebreaker to claim the fourth seed for the playoffs. Tagwi officially finishes fifth, and their season is over.

St. Joseph's takes first place, followed by Holy Trinity and North Dundas to round out the post-season seeds.

The playoff tournament will take place Feb. 28 in Long Sault. We will have more details in next week's edition of The Glengarry News.
