Sheppard wins the Super DIRTcar Big Block Series to cap off 2017  at Cornwall Motor Speedway

sean Sep 18, 2017 - 6:05pm

The Big Blocks visited the Cornwall Motor Speedway last Sunday, capping off the 2017 racing season for the area's track.

Tim O’Brien and Keith Flach led the field of 30 cars to the green, when Steve Bernard slowed the group on the initial lap and yellow lights were out. Flach took first as racing continued, with Peter Britten and O’Brien colliding on lap 7.

Flach remained in front, with Larry Wight moving up to second and O’Brien bringing another caution on lap 21. Wight was quick on the restart to seize the lead over Flach on lap 25, as Billy Decker followed suit two laps later. Wight had Decker as a dancing partner, as Decker then grabbed the first position, while Matt Sheppard moved up to third.

Decker pulled away from the field as Wight, Sheppard, Flach, and Alexandria's Chris Raabe were the top 5 when the race reached the halfway point.

The leaders got into heavy traffic with 60 laps in the books. Cornwall Speedway track champion Chris Raabe slowed, and caution was out on lap 72. Decker remained the top man, however, as the battle continued for second spot. Sheppard was able to pass Wight for the position on lap 81 and set his sights on Decker. Lap traffic helped Sheppard, as he closed in on Decker with 10 laps to go. Sheppard used the inside lane and surprised the leader on lap 92. The drivers challenged each other the rest of the way, but Sheppard stayed in front to garner win #10 on the tour in 2017.

Cornwall Motor Speedway update on track points races

sean Aug 30, 2017 - 11:24am

The 2017 regular season will end in fashion at Cornwall Motor Speedway, as the final round of the Canadian Nationals Modified Series will be run, combined with the second leg of the DIRTcar 358-Modified Series. The DIRTcar Sportsman will also be in attendance, while the Pro-Stock and Mini-Stock divisions will have a regular night to cap off the regular-season points races.

By finishing second in last Sunday's Modified feature event, Chris Raabe has already secured the 2017 track title in the premier division, Raabe scores a second title in a row, and he will enter the upcoming program with the coveted Canadian Nationals title on his mind. The driver of the 01 machine has a 37-point lead over Jordan McCreadie. He will also look to sweep the series,l having won the first two races. Another strong group of invaders will be in town for the $5,000 event. Again 125 laps are scheduled for the race that will be combined with the DIRTcar 358-Modified Series. The initial round at Granby gathered a great field of 42 competitors.

The 50-lap DIRTcar Sportsman Series feature race will be fun to watch as the track championship battle is shaping up for a great finish with Justin Lalancette holding a thin 15-point lead over Tristan Draper. Just to add to the challenge, having the DIRTcar Series in town will bring several invaders for round two of the North section of the series. Numbers in high 30s/low 40s are expected for this race.

In the Pro-Stock class, George Renaud saw his points lead melt down to 18 over CD Beauchamp, who captured his third win of the season last Sunday evening. The upcoming race will be a 25-lap event.

The championship run that will be the most exciting will certainly be the Mini-Stock feature with only a single point separating Marc Dagenais and Mike Gaucher. Both drivers have been in a heated battle in the last few weeks, and they will bring everything to the table during the 15-lap event as both drivers are looking for a first title in the division.

For this coming Sunday, pit gates will open at 2 pm with a cost of $40. General admission will open at 4 pm with a cost of $30 for adults, $15 for seniors, and $2 for kids 16 years old and under. Time trials are scheduled to start at 5:30 pm, with qualifying races to follow at 6 pm.
